Michelin Challenge Design 2013: the winners

Michelin has broadcast the three winners of the 2013 Michelin Challenge Design titled “HALF! Lightweight with Passion”: Jorge Biosca, (Spain), Liu Shun (China) and Song Wei Teo (Singapore).

This year’s Michelin Challenge Design topic “HALF! Lightweight with Passion” inquired participants to explore how conceive assists to and influences the ongoing effort to develop more lightweight vehicles that accomplish larger fuel effectiveness.

The topic resulted in more than 900 registrants comprising 72 countries. The peak three projects were chosen by a committee made up of designers from OEM studios, independent design professionals, and conceive educators.

The jury evaluated the works founded on the following criteria: relevance to the topic; notionoriginality; conceive worth and quality; developmental potential; and conceive displayability.

The triumphant projects, along with 12 other finalists, have been offered at the 2013 North American worldwide Auto Show in the Michelin dispute conceive display.

Jorge Biosca’s project, called eLink, is “a six-passenger light vehicle structure, with a highlyeffective powertrain, blended with an adaptive camber command for exhaust rubber zone selection.”

The notion is easy to build and recycle and its components can be re-used in new or distinctapplications. The vehicle is very lightweight which permits it to effortlessly reach high-speeds with a small allowance of power consumption.

The Exploder II has a four wheel propel scheme, each one of these wheels uses the Michelinhardworking Wheel technology and an individual electric engine that controls the vehicle directionconnected to the guiding wheel by a wireless system.

The Michelin Active wheels toe-in to allow the vehicle to rotate about a pivot issue that isestablished at the center of the vehicle.

The major body of the Exploder II is made of extended lightweight tensile fabric with integrated thin movie solar panels on a tubular structure made of Thermoplastic Composite Materials. These new components are harder, lighter, stiffer, and have an infinite ledge life, and can be recycled and perform better throughout collisions in order to use substantially less power.

About the Designer

Jorge Biosca is a freelance modeler and conceive advisor in Valencia, Spain, with a degree in mechanical engineering from Polytechnic University of Valencia and a master’s degree in automotive design from the University CEU San Pablo, Valencia, Spain.

PolyPlus by Song Wei Teo (Singapore)

PolyPlus by Song Wei Teo

Song Wei Teo’s PolyPlus was “influenced by the use of vacuum-formed artificial packaging that protects its contents. Vacuum-formed artificials are inexpensive, lightweight, strong and can be molded into distinct shapes easily.”

He thought the idea could elaborate into the automotive context and advanced the conceiveshort based on its centre requirements: “the design has to be lightweight with the use of manufacturing procedures, materials and fit a family of four to six.”

To do this he decreased the total parts, and introduced new components not ever utilised in thevehicle conceive industry (Aerospace spec carbonate artificial) and constructing methods – vacuum forming takes away needed chassis structure conceive and therefore save a lot ofheaviness.

About the Designer

recital Wei Teo was born in Singapore. He came to Nanyang Polytechnic in Singapore with a degree in developed conceive.
He is actually in his last year studying Automotive Design at Coventry University, joined Kingdom.

Liu Shun commanded his partners, Gao Zhiqiang and Chen Zhilei, all students at the Huazhong University of research and Technology in ceramic, conceived a notion with a body entirely made of transparent glass and carbon fiber border, called Dolphin, which is driven by maglev DC motors.

“Our notion makes people seem games, research and technology. It furthermore can accommodate the constituents of a family.”

“The structure of vehicle body is a full transparent glass and carbon fibers border and the lightweight conceive is not only to ensure security purposes, but furthermore to substantiallyreduce the power consumption.”

About the Designers

Shun Liu, 20, was born in China and is actually in his fourth year studying Product conceive at the Huazhong University of research and Technology. He furthermore has a great interest intransport Design. He was bestowed “The best luxury notion” in the CarDesignNews affray with Zhiqiang Gao.

Zhiqiang Gao, 23, was born in ceramic and is currently revising at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology. He partnered with Shun Liu and was bestowed “The best luxury notion”in the CarDesignNews competition. He furthermore accomplished an internship with Volkswagen in Shanghai last summer.

Zhilei Chen, 26, was born and increased in China, He obtained his Master’s degree from Wuhan University of Technology. He majored in vehicle engineering and opened his own studio for carconceive services and teaching.

In considering this year’s works, Chapman sensed “there were a allotment of facets to it that really had to force persons to think…not everything that’s lightweight is going to be only carrying two people. It is a dispute, and I believe most of them lived up to that aspect.”

Saucedo, having assisted on this jury XX times, states that Michelin Challenge conceive “not onlycheck the younger scholars, it checks professionals, so I believe it’s great.”

Newcomer Chuck Pelly had this to state: “The incredible work that this affray has assisted ismotivating, and I really didn’t understand the scope until today.”

Plavetich furthermore joined the committee for the first year, and says, “It’s habitually fun toarrive to an happening like this, where you’re looking at applications submitted from juvenilepersons all round the world…you have these solutions approaching in from all round the world, some of them way out there maybe. But there’s generally a grain or a nugget of something in there, there’s something that can inspire you, to take back to my job at Nissan and make our vehicles much more interesting.”

Several of the jurors this year have given their time to this affray many times. amidst the veterans were Chapman, Marek, Saucedo, Thomas, and Wardle. Newcomers encompassedPlavetich and Pelly.

“Through the quest for vehicle weight reduction, designers have to consider components such assigns of security and style within a lightweight bundle and how these direct the materialsassortment and fabrication processes,” said Stewart Reed, seating of the transport conceiveDepartment, Art Center school of conceive, and Michelin dispute conceive committee head person.

“Addressing the real-world trials that advanced vehicle designers face has been a hallmark of the Michelin Challenge Design and the 2013 topic extends the legacy of identifying the gifteddesigners who may help conceive tomorrow’s vehicles.”

“Now more than ever, thriving automotive conceive relies on close collaboration between design, technology, manufacturing and planning,” said John Moloney, vice president of original gearmarketing for North and South America.

“The experts that make up the Michelin dispute Design committee realise the art and research of automotive innovation.”
